“A servant of God, a mother to many, a teacher of generations, and a daughter of Nyakasura whose light will continue to shine.”
With deep sorrow, yet with hearts full of gratitude to God for the gift of her life, Nyakasura School mourns the passing of Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice Mbabazi Atenyi; a remarkable daughter of the school, a faithful servant of God, a dedicated teacher, a compassionate counsellor and a loving mother whose life touched countless hearts.
Until her passing, Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice served as the School Chaplain of Nyakasura School, faithfully ministering to the spiritual, emotional and moral wellbeing of students and staff. Her service at Nyakasura was not merely an appointment; it was a divine homecoming. She returned to the institution that had nurtured her as a young learner and poured back her life, wisdom, faith and love into the same community that had helped shape her.
For years, she walked the corridors of Nyakasura not only as a chaplain and teacher but as a motherly presence always ready with a word of encouragement, a listening ear, a prayer and a comforting smile. As a teacher of General Paper, she inspired students to think critically, understand the world around them and become responsible citizens. Her classroom was not just a place of academic instruction; it was a place where young minds were shaped and lives were transformed.
Born on 3rd October 1961 to the late Mr. Kutaaga George William and the late Mrs. Loy Kutaaga, Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice was raised with values of faith, humility, discipline and service — values that would become the foundation of her extraordinary life.
Her journey with Nyakasura School began as a young student where she completed her Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) in 1981 and was attached to Damali House. The school was not just an institution to her; it became part of her identity and a place she would later return to serve with distinction.
Her return to Nyakasura years later as a chaplain, teacher and mentor was a beautiful testimony of gratitude — giving back to the community that had invested in her.
From an early age, Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice had a deep desire to dedicate her life to God. She admired the calling and discipline of a Rev. Sister and desired to embrace a life fully devoted to spiritual service. However, as she discovered and embraced her identity within the Anglican faith, she found her own unique path of serving God and His people.
She chose to live a life of celibacy, dedicating herself completely to the ministry of God and the service of humanity. It was a life of sacrifice, commitment and love — one where she surrendered personal desires to embrace a greater calling.
Though she never had biological children of her own, she became a mother to countless people whose lives she touched. Students, colleagues, church members and many others found in her the love, guidance and care of a true mother. Many called her “Mother”, and she lived up to that name fully and generously.
She did not give birth biologically, but she birthed hope, faith, confidence and purpose in thousands of lives. Through her words, prayers, counsel and acts of kindness, she nurtured generations.
Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice was a lifelong learner whose passion for knowledge was matched by her commitment to serving others. She pursued both academic and theological training, equipping herself to minister effectively in education, counselling and spiritual leadership.

Her unique combination of education, counselling and theology enabled her to minister to the whole person — mind, body and spirit.
Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice devoted her entire life to the service of God and His people. She was ordained as a priest in the South Rwenzori Diocese and later installed as a Canon in 2005, a recognition of her faithful service and commitment to the Church of Uganda.
Her ministry extended far beyond the church altar. She invested deeply in young people through programmes such as the Boys and Girls’ Brigade, nurturing discipline, faith and character among the younger generation.
Her passion for leadership and service was also evident during her time at Uganda Christian University, where she served as Secretary for Women Affairs of the UCU Guild Council (1999–2000) and later as Annex Chairperson of the Guild Council (2000–2001).
To Nyakasura School and everyone who encountered her, Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice was more than a chaplain and teacher — she was a mother.
She had a rare gift of making people feel loved, valued and accepted. Students found in her a counsellor and guide; staff found in her a dependable colleague and friend; and the wider community found in her a woman whose heart was always open to serve.
Her generosity was one of the greatest marks of her life. She gave freely of her time, wisdom, prayers and resources. She was always willing to go the extra mile for others, placing their needs above her own.
She carried the pain of others, celebrated their victories and stood with many through difficult seasons. Her love was not limited by family ties, age or background — it was a reflection of the love of Christ.
The passing of Rev. Can. Capt. Beatrice Mbabazi Atenyi leaves a deep emptiness at Nyakasura School, the Church of Uganda and in the many communities she served. Yet, we do not only mourn her departure; we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a mission faithfully accomplished.
She leaves behind a legacy built on faith, love, sacrifice and service. The many students she guided, the people she counselled, the colleagues she encouraged and the lives she transformed will forever carry her memory.
Nyakasura School will forever cherish her as a beloved daughter, an exceptional teacher, a faithful chaplain and a mother to thousands.
Her life was a true reflection of the school motto:
“To Minister And Not To Be Ministered Unto.” — Mark 10:45
As we bid farewell to this great servant of God, we hold on to the assurance that her labour was not in vain. Her earthly journey may have ended, but her love, teachings and service will continue to speak through generations.
