As Nyakasura School in Fort Portal prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, we reflect on its remarkable legacy as the birthplace of school cricket in Uganda. Established in the scenic Rwenzori Mountains, Nyakasura has been a cornerstone of sporting excellence since the first ball was bowled on its grounds in 1929. The school’s cricket pitch has remained a vibrant hub of activity, where students proudly wear their traditional kilts, honing their skills and passion for the game that is deeply embedded in the school’s identity.
Over the decades, Nyakasura has produced some of Uganda’s most prominent cricket players, many of whom have represented the nation on international stages. Notable alumni include Murungi Pascal, who captained the national team to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier after a 19-year absence, as well as talented siblings Baguma Joseph and Asaba Brian from Harugongo. Other distinguished players like Ategeka Isaac from Bukuuku, Musinguzi Mathew from Rwengoma, and national team coach Ivan Thawithemwira from Kasese have all contributed to the school’s storied cricket tradition, showcasing the talent nurtured within its walls.
