As Nyakasura turns 100, Uganda celebrates a sporting giant

The birthplace of school cricket in Uganda, where the first ball was bowled in 1929.

As Nyakasura School celebrates its 100th anniversary, we reflect on its legacy as the birthplace of school cricket in Uganda. The first ball was bowled on its grounds in 1929, and the pitch has been a hub of activity ever since, with students proudly playing in their traditional kilts.

Nyakasura has produced some of Uganda's best-known cricketers. They include Pascal Murungi, who captained the national team to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier after a 19-year absence; brothers Joseph Baguma and Brian Asaba; Isaac Ategeka; Mathew Musinguzi; and national team coach Ivan Thawithemwira.

The centenary is a chance to inspire the next generation of cricketers and to renew our commitment to excellence in sport.
