Nyakasura School Emerges Victorious in 2024 National Debate Championship

Nyakasura School has once again solidified its dominance in debate, claiming victory in the 2024 Uganda Speech and Debate Champions League (USDCL) National Champions Category.

The event, which started on December 4,2024 and ended on December 7,2024 at the Office of the President-Twin Towers Kampala, saw Nyakasura School outclass Mbarara High School in a thrilling finale, reaffirming their legacy as champions with prior wins in 2014 and 2017.

The Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG), Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, who was the Chief Guest, commended the young debaters for their passion and commitment to tackling critical national issues.

“Every argument and rebuttal gives a fresh perspective and raises our consciousness about the critical issues that affect us as a nation,” she remarked.

She highlighted the importance of empowering youth, particularly in the fight against corruption, urging participants to always embrace integrity, patriotism, and social responsibility.

“Youth are among the most vulnerable to various forms of corruption. Platforms like these prepare them to take on future responsibilities,” Dr. Okiria noted.

Amos Ngolobe, Special Presidential Advisor on Litigation, echoed similar sentiments, appreciating the students for their energy and innovative ideas during the competition.

“Their actions today are a testament to the potential of youth to lead the fight against corruption. Empowered youth are a formidable force if given access to education and platforms for advocacy,” he said.

The USDCL24 brought together over 24 schools from across Uganda, featuring intense semi-finals where Nyakasura School faced off against Kira College Butiki and Mbarara High School competed with Mengo Senior School.

Regional champions Kawempe Muslim Secondary School and Divine Mercy Secondary School also showcased remarkable talent in their debates.

Ngolobe thanked the organizers, led by Gasta Kakaire the Executive Director of the national debate council for creating such opportunities for young people.

“Such debates remind us that a unified, informed, and vocal society can dismantle even the most entrenched system of corruption,”
